According to UGC (2002 - 2003) there are over 92 Lacs students studying at various universities and colleges in India. Out of these about 6.92 Lacs study Engineering, 16.6 Lacs study management/commerce, 3 Lacs study medicine, 41.5 Lacs study arts, 18.3 Lacs study science and the balance are in the other streams. There are also about 15437 colleges out of which approx. 11128 are general education colleges, 1077 are Engineering/Technology/Architecture colleges and 1253 are Medical colleges.
The above statistics indicates towards a large opportunity just waiting to be tapped. A large no of students studying at these higher education institutions are challenged in the area of English language and soft skills. It is often seen that many brilliant students fail to get a good job because of lack of these critical soft skills.
There is a growing awareness in the management of these institutions about the importance of building student proficiency in English Language and other associated soft skills.
